Design Down Time

Design Down Time: March

Greetings from Bend, Oregon! I’m by no means settled in yet; Jason and I are still in temporary housing at a hotel while we finalize renting a house (and get all of our stuff like our cars and everything else from the movers). But I’ve got some free time since I don’t start part-time freelancing…

Design Down Time: February & Big Life Update

Remember how I said I couldn’t do my one monthly tutorial due to being crazy busy? Well, just kidding! Thanks to Leap Day, I barely made it! Here’s why I thought I wouldn’t be able to: Jason has accepted a job offer in Bend, OR and I’m moving there with him. It’s all very exciting and a little…

Design Down Time: February

February has been a bit of a crazy month. I don’t want to say that I’m already failing one of my new years resolutions, but it does kind of feel that way when it’s the 26th of February, you haven’t done your one design tutorial for the month, and one of your resolutions is “Do…

Design Down Time: January

On the first of this month, I announced as part of my new years resolutions that I would try to do at the very least one design/illustration/web tutorial per month and post it here. Here’s the first installment of that series “Design Down Time.”

Welcome to my blog! A place for me to talk about all my interests including: design, illustration, lettering, cosplay, and the keto lifestyle. I also wrote a short series about my family's journey from the Philippines to America called "Leaving Home" and hope to write more series in the same vein as it.

Was going to save this for tbt, but couldn't help myself. How about some #cosplayglowup with my first ever cosplay and my latest one? 😂I found my con badge from the first con I ever attended. On it was a souvenir pic I took in my Edward Elric cosplay! Online cosplay stores just weren't a thing 13 years ago, so I threw this together from things I found at the mall and party city. I wasn't even aware that people would go as far as using wigs for their costumes until I got to the con floor. And making it from scratch by learning how to sew didn't cross my mind either. The only thing I really contributed was a piece of cardboard I painted silver and taped a safety pin to for the little clip on my jacket. My best bud @theborrowedwoods braided my hair for me and I honestly had a blast. Fast forward to Kali, where I made everything from scratch, spent almost 80 hours hand stitching the embroidery, and used both a wig and makeup. I also obsessed over accuracy for ages. 😊My cosplay glowup journey may be longer and slower than some cosplayers, but it's mine and I'm very happy with how far I've come.
Finally added the little pendants (I don't know what else to call them) to the belt ends of Kali's hakama skirt! With that, Kali is officially complete! Now whether or not I'm going to make minor adjustments, I have no idea. But for now, everything is accounted for and con ready! Wait, except for buying gold contacts. Dang it. There's always something else, isn't there?
Random throwback to when I cosplayed as Takako Chigusa from Battle Royale. I loved Chiaki Kuriyama in Kill Bill, so when I saw that she had been in BR, I knew I wanted to cosplay her again. I actually wore my hair like Takako's for a while because of this movie lol maybe I should get bangs again...📷by @tcschiller
Everybody look out! Kali got a hold of Weiss's Myrtenaster and she's not afraid to use it! ⚔️Chatted with a fellow RWBY fan while waiting in line to meet Jessica Nigri at Fan Expo Dallas and he let me take a pic with the sword he had just bought at the con! It was pretty hefty, much heavier than I thought it'd be.
Took a quick video this morning of the bolero clip in action! The collar closes via hooks and eyes and then the clip goes on with some snaps. Having the pendant really ties the whole bolero together nicely. 😊 Thanks (for the thousandth time lol) to @skim_milk_cosplay for the beautiful resin casted brooches! One day I'll learn how to do it myself. For now, I felt like my money was better spent supporting another cosplayer.
Made some Kali progress tonight! Tried weathering for the first time and think I did a decent job! Then sewed on snaps to the bolero and super glued snaps to the back of the small pendant. Just waiting for the sealant to dry and then I can start gluing the four big pieces to the hakama skirt belt. I'm really loving how it's all turning out. 😁
